Introduction to Banking (2018)

Overview

This eCourse consists of three modules. Module 1 is a video which provides a high-level overview of banking, beginning with the role of banks in the provision in credit and capital as well as payments services. The video also describes fractional reserve banking, the difference between commercial and investment banking, the different types of bank ownership model, the growth of shadow banking, and the key banking industry stakeholders.

Module 2 looks at the role of modern consumer banking institutions. The key issues addressed include the structure of the sector, the product offerings, the drivers of profitability, and the role of regulation.

Module 3 looks at the typical structures associated with investment banks and their key activities and sources of revenue, namely M&A advice, underwriting, sales and trading, asset management, and prime brokerage.

Objective

On completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Define consumer banking and identify the main distribution channels
- Recognize the products and services offered by consumer banks, including liability-side products, asset-side products, and money transmission and payments services
- Identify typical consumer banking organizational structures and the key aspects related to their regulation
- Define the key organizational structures used in investment banking
- Identify the main activities and sources of revenue of investment banks
